  • There are fewer young people who are ready to marry in Bulgaria. The reason, however, is not a desire for career and success, but a complicated marriage procedure in that country that violates basic human rights.

Those who want to enter a marital union in Bulgaria must have a medical certificate of marriage. And in order to get such a document it is possible to obtain the necessary assurances from the gynecologist and psychiatrist!

The review costs 30 euros, which is a huge figure compared to the average salary in Bulgaria of 295 euros. This overview does not cover medical insurance because it is only for sick people. Since it's not a standard review, everyone is obliged to pay it.

However, the price of the review is not the biggest problem. According to the Bulgarian family law of 2009, which remains in force, there is a division into those who laugh and those who are not allowed to marry, according to a criterion that is extremely vague and far from European values.

The Bulgarian law prohibits people with communicable diseases who "present a serious danger to the life and health of the offspring or other partner" to marry, except in cases when the partner is informed of it and agrees to marry in spite of that.

However, the problem is that the exact list of diseases is not listed, so it's easy to conclude that this probably means that people who suffer from sexually transmitted diseases, mental disorders and genetic malformations fall into the group of "partner-risk".
The logic guided by those who devised such legal solutions is that the individual should be in perfect condition in order to create a strong and healthy individual for the glorious Bulgarian nation, and this doctrine is being coined by many to Valeri Simeonov, the deputy prime minister in charge of overseeing social policies and demography that is a member of the far-right supporter of the "Patriotic Front", otherwise known for its anti-immigrant and anti-democratic attitudes.
A complicated, costly and lengthy procedure that can be said to violate basic human rights has led to a growing number of Bulgarians considering marriage.
The recently published data of "Eurostat" reveals that Bulgaria is at the bottom of the EU's list of marriages, together with Slovenia and Portugal. Outrageous statistics reveal that on average only three out of 1,000 men marry. This results in almost 60% of babies in Bulgaria born in unmarried communities.
